How to double control bottons (Picade hat)

How do you double control bottons (Picade hat) instead of getting 'Already Configured'
I want too use the 'A' bottom as the 'start' botton.
Any advice of setting the Picade up too with only 4 bottons and a joy stick.
Thanks in advance.

Can you elaborate on what you want to do. Cores can be remapped individually if that's what you're looking to do. Also, please do not post a support request without first reading and following the advice in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first. Most important there in this case is relaying as much information about your setup as possible.

@mediamogul I have 4 bottons and a hoy stick. I was wondering how it would be best to map the bottons and if the bottons can be mapped to two things in the control setup in the UI

This can't be done for EmulationStation. A and Start have very different actions.

@mediamogul Thanks, I've installed it but need a little help with the programming of it how you have suggested could you recommend a good totorial or perhaps is there some kind of GUI I could intstall and use?

Unfortunately, the guide I linked to above is about as easy as it gets and there's no GUI. If you have the basics in place, adding a button combination with the 'B' and 'A' set to act as 'start' would look like:
--ui-buttonmap b+a=start
It should be noted that the learning curve for all this is pretty high. However, it does get easier over time if it's something you want to explore. Also, while handy for Emulation Station, this really wouldn't be ideal for game play, as there are plenty of times where any two buttons will need to be pressed to trigger a game event and the game will only ever see your chosen combination as being the 'start' button. Of course, the mapping can be disabled once a game is launched, so there are possible work-arounds, but you're always going to be at a disadvantage with so few buttons.
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
