What controller do you use?
-
Wired Dualshock 3. It's definitely all-round better than the 360 - both d-pad and stick -wise. Don`t
know about wireless, mine works as plug and play.I was recommended the Buffalo SNES USB many times - supposed to be an ultimate 16 bit controller - however it`s bit pricey here in the UK (~25 pounds or import from Asia)
Hah, I remember sniggering at Gravis back in the day - I was a die-hard PC master racer back then and controllers were an anathema (also, it was fairly expensive). These days I preach that people using KBM for everything are cavemen. Times change ;)

I use a pair of 8bitdo NES30s for my primary setup, but picked these up for a second setup I'm putting together. They're really, really good for the price. Much better than any other generic SNES style USB controller I've ever used.
-
Rock Candy Xbox 360 (wired) due to the nature of them being cheap, pretty damn solid and easily replaceable for those ... "friends" that tend to try to damn hard and break the buttons in the process.
I always found the xbox360 button setup a lot more comfortable then the playstation format.
Alternatively i leave part of the usb-xbox connecter in my pi and another in my pc that way i always use mine and don't let anyone else use it xD.

Wii U Pro controller here, because that's what I had lying around and it has been an absolute pleasure to use, definitely great for retro gaming as the button layout and the dpad is similar enough to a SNES pad but it's even more comfortable. I'm considering getting some of the 8bitdo ones but I'm not sure if they'll add enough to be worth it.
-
My personal favourites are the very inexpensive Gioteck VX2 wired pads. They are really brilliant for Pi gaming. Though the D pad is a little clicky sounding, it is excellent for fighters. Nary a Dragon Punch missed! ;) And the analogue works extremely well on N64. Very good value for money.

Does anyone have any good controllers with analog joysticks?

I use a Wii U Pro controller as well. Probably the easiest option to use imo.

@backstander I think Nintendo basically got the d-pad right the first time and everyone else has been trying to make something similar but not infringing their design patent and therefore failing.
@AlexMurphy The patent actually has expired on the d-pad, which is why you see the xbox one controller with a d-pad very similar to the Nintendo style. Also, everyone hates on the 360 d-pad because it is extremely imprecise. Try playing street fighter 2 turbo with that d-pad compared to an SNES or Playstation controller and you'll see how hard it is to get the inputs for special moves.
The gaming historian actually has a really interesting video on the subject.

Yea boy! Picked this guy up off ebay cheap. Had to take it apart and clean it but works great for fighting games. Different experience.

@rig This looks nice. Can you please tell me what brand this is?
-
Looks like a Mad Catz one.
-
Dualshock 4 with USB cable. Never tried to sync it with the bluetooth option.

It's a madcatz fight stick (version 3 I think) They are pricey but you can pick up a busted one and replace the parts pretty cheap and easy. It uses the same hardware from Japanese arcade cabinets.

I am buying my Pi 3 this week and the controller i will be using is my GameSir G3s and PS3 controller wired just until i build my arcade cab and have a proper arcade experience.
-
i use fc30 pro , neo geo x arcade stick or dualshock
-
This madcatz stick for arcade games (i replaced the ball top with a bat top) and original super famicom pads connected via gpio on my sfc case mod.
I tried to use an original pc engine controller I modded for usb for nes and pcengine, but it doesn't feel as good as the sfc pads.

@Darksavior Ever tried a Neo-Geo MVS controller? It looks great... but there is no way you are going to treat a controller you bought and paid for the way you treat one in an arcade after dropping 10p in the Coin Slot. No comparison. The old joke is... "Drive it like you rented it!"

This one? I bought the usb version a few years back and it was a waste of cash. I don't remember if it was an official product. Cheap junk. Not sure if i can mod it, but it'll take too much work. The stick clicks too loud for my tastes, and the buttons tend to stick slightly. I made my own Happ joystick case in around 2000 so I was a bit spoiled by joysticks since then. I moved to madcatz with their sanwa parts and that's my preferred choice now.
-
@Darksavior That looks like a Third Party one. Even then, I think my point stands. I'll happily snap an arcade owners' joystick... Ahem, you get me point. I am sure.
-
@AlexMurphy SNK actually made an exact model like this, I just questioned whether the usb version was official.
