I used the setup script from the manual install instructions. Everything installed smoothly, no issues. I can boot straight to emulationstation and that works great. I can boot to kodi and that also works. But when I boot to desktop, the desktop comes up for about five seconds and then exits to the text console. I can run sudo systemctl restart lightdm to bring the desktop back and then everything is fine. During the boot, before the desktop appears, I also see the RetroPie splash screen (I assume that is expected behavior).

Here is a screenshot of the text console after the desktop environment has disappeared

I'm experienced with the command line but not that familiar with the raspberry pi. Can someone help me debug? I don't see anything obvious in the logs, except maybe some errors or warnings about bluetooth. Attached some log output if it helps:

      dmesg
      /var/log/syslog

      Further information:

Raspberry pi 3 model b, powered by wall usb plug
attached devices are usb mouse and usb game controller

@r4mbleon disable the retropie splash if you're booting to desktop and try that

@herb_fargus that fixed it. thank you!

do you think this issue could affect other users? maybe the docs could instruct users to disable the splash screen, or maybe the setup script should automatically disable the splash when boot to desktop option is selected? let me know if i can help, thanks again!

@r4mbleon I thought for some reason that was part of the autostart script but maybe it was something we discussed and never implemented. it was a while ago that we did it.

For now yes i think its something that can (should) be added to the manual installation page and/or the FAQ page.

also in case you want to have both the splash and the desktop environment you can use plymouth though its a tad (lot) more involved than switching out a png
