Hi i am new to all of this and getting my Pi 3 with arcade sticks/buttons next week and i wanted to know since they will be USB would RetroPie read each joysticks or would it read both as one and configure it in the settings or something (also building the Pi inside of the arcade stick so all i need to do is power it and hook it to any TV)

@Ecks It will depend on the hardware. For example, I have a 4-player cabinet that is basically like 4 arcade sticks with a display. My sticks and buttons are connected via USB, but the controller shows up as a keyboard.

So, there is no definitive answer given the details you shared. You would need to provide a lot more detail about the exact controller hardware you have before someone here can share their experience with it.

Well this is the joystick parts i am going to buy https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B06XW4R92C/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=307COWNYN32PF&coliid=I2VMVUC13JSJWS
and i prefer that style stick over the one with the ball on the top because most arcade machines where i grew up used those and when i tried out one's with the ball as well it felt odd.

@Ecks That item says it comes with 2 "Zero Delay" encoders. That is what they are called. Do a forum search for "Zero Delay" and read through the posts. You will learn everything anyone as asked or answered about this controller. That is going to be your best source of info before getting hands-on experience with these.

Ok thanks man just new to the whole Raspberry Pi thing and building an arcade joystick you know but just want to know from your own opinion would it be better if i have the Pi outside of the arcade joysticks or inside of it because i was watching video's with just the heatsinks on the Pi getting a little hot and not too sure my original idea of slapping on the back panel of the arcade joystick something like 2 40mm fans with some vent holes you know.

@Ecks I have a heat sink on my Pi3, no fan, enclosed in my case (see link in my signature). Works a treat.

If you do not mind me asking you this but would this one be a better choice over the one i picked out https://www.amazon.ca/Quimat-Raspberry-RetroPie-Joystick-Buttons/dp/B06XC7PPQQ/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2D94JH6Q0UQN1&colid=307COWNYN32PF also would like to know if you could also map out the controls for each game for FBA because i will have Neo Geo games in the mix with the Capcom games and well you know 8 button layouts cause for capcom i want to have it laid out like the street fighter way and of course Neo Geo have it mapped out that way.
Also another thing for cooling would this be a good solution for my Pi https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01N9LXXXK/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2FIH82PYRF5VW because when i saw this it looks cool to have something green oh and before i forget was thinking since i still owned this alt text if that would be like a cool solution as well.

@Ecks that joystick/buttons/controller combo you linked from Amazon is a popular reference, but I have no experience with it. I use an old model Ultimarc IPAC4. Your kit comes with a Zero Delay controller. You can search for Zero Delay on this forum and see what people have written about it.

Mapping controls will depend on how the controller works. My configuration (in a retroarch.cfg file because I am using the libretro core emulator) will differ from yours most likely. Actually, it will depend on how you wire your buttons too. I have configs for each ROM in some cases, although it usually boils down to six button fighter games (I only have six buttons) and NeoGeo layouts. One or the other of these types of games requires a per-ROM config file to remap from the defaults I have configured.

As for the heat sink, the one you linked should work fine. Mine is actually cut from an old Pentium CPU heatsink. In any case, the attachment is very important. I use a thermal compound specifically designed for CPUs (Arctic Silver). It works great, and I never have throttling issues due to heat (but I used to, before the heat sink). Other folks have had good luck and bad luck with the self-adhesive tape. I know there are tapes out there that work fine, but sometimes you end up with a bad adheasive that insulates rather than conducts heat. I would make sure you have a good thermal adhesive as a backup in case the one that comes with it does not work.

Ok but what about that fan i linked as well because i am going to have it right next to the Pi inside my arcade cab well of course it would be sticking outside of it but that is for ventilation of course also wish i was good at making 3D models so i could show exactly my plan on what i plan on doing because i think the way i plan on building mine would be a little more unique in a way which i hope it would be.

@Ecks if your sink is attached properly you might not need a fan. I don't have one, but if it makes you feel better, go for it. I would not waste the time nor the effort.
