Help testing: Random Video Screensaver on Main Branch
-
@pjft Tried on Pi3 compiled very fast. Problem was that the Video is in the middle of the gamelist. same as the photo above but zoomed out because I am running it on 1080p.
When the screensaver starts, it runs for few seconds before HDMI shuts off. Pressing Up/Down brings HDMI back up.
-
@Hex Ok.
So, that's a weird thing, and I'm starting to suspect it's something related to the theme. Could you try changing the theme, or something? I cannot replicate the video showing in the middle of the gamelist at all, much less on the Pi :(
Can you share one of the theme files for the system you're having problems with? Alternatively, maybe someone else is having the same problem and can chime in, but I'm struggling with that one as I cannot replicate it.
As for HDMI shutting off, it's likely related to one of the bullet points I left at the first post:
Note 3: if, after enabling the video game name on screensaver the screen loses signal when rendering the screensaver, that's unfortunately a known OMX/SDL layer limitation. The workaround is to either disable that option, or add
disable_overscan=1
to your/boot/config.txt
file.Does that happen with the "Show game name" option set to off? Can you try disabling overscan?
I'm looking into the VLC screensaver tonight, should have news soon.

Same thing here on my RetroPie x86 (Linux Mint). It happened with ComicBook and Carbon themes.
Changed back to the official EmulationStation and the video is in the right place...
I'm away from computer now but can give more details when I get home.

OK Summery:
On PC (Linux) Theme ComicBook : only audio plays, screen is blank
On PI3 Theme ComicBook : HDMI shuts off after 2/3 secs -
@Hex Thanks.
Just to confirm the summary:
- On PC (Linux) Theme ComicBook : only audio plays, screen is blank during screensaver
- On PI3 Theme ComicBook : HDMI shuts off after 2/3 secs during screensaver
Correct?
I've just pushed new code to test on non-Pi devices, for VLC. I added an option for video quality as well, if you plan on using captions. @meleu and @Hex : Could you try "Highest" and see if it performs well or sluggish on your Linux computers? If it performs well, I'll remove the option, as that was the default anyway.
Let me know if that helps.
@Hex : Have you tried disabling overscan and seeing if the HDMI problem goes away? Does it also happen when you do not have the "Show game name" option turned on?
I'll try to see what may be causing the video showing at the wrong place, but I'm very much stumped here.
Thanks for testing, will report back.

@Hex On pi3 i have no issues running with HDMI with comic book or any other theme. Everything runs well.
Question - on the pi, do all of your gamelists match with the video files you have? check your error log and see. If you have a gamelist that lists videos, but the videos do not exist, the screen will default to black. I am sure you have checked this, but i am not understanding what is causing your HDMI to shut off.

@pjft @TMNTturtlguy I found out where I was going wrong. I was compiling your master branch rather than Screensaver merge. Screensaver is working well. Video snap doesnt play at all.
@meleu Check if the same thing is happening to you
EDIT : Tested on PC Linux -
-
@Hex When changing the screensaver off and on, you need to exit the gamelist and reenter the gamelist one time to "reload" the video snap previews. Let me expand on this.
If you are in the game selection menu where you see the video snap playing. If you go into the menu and change the screensaver from off to on, i often find that the video snaps go blank. If i exit out to the system view and go back into the game selection the video data reloads. Not sure if this is the case for you, but give it a try.

Hey guys,
I've downloaded/compiled that branch again and it seems fine. Not sure what happened before... I didn't change any setting.I'm a little busy with the kids now, sorry if it lacks more details. :)
-
Forgot to mention: RetroPie x86 (Linux Mint).
More info: when I came back to terminal I saw a bunch of this message (I googled about it and it seems to be related to VLC, but I don't have time to go deep in the investigation)
Fontconfig warning: FcPattern object size does not accept value "0" Fontconfig warning: FcPattern object size does not accept value "0"
-
@meleu Thanks for the report!
I suspect I know where that is coming from. Will look into that. :)
Any other problems or concerns? Anything that's not working?
@Hex : do you confirm it's still not working, or what did you mean by "video snap doesn't play at all"? And was that on the Pi or on Linux?
Thanks all! Have a great Sunday!
-
@meleu Hm.
I actually don't, yet.
A few questions, if I may:
- Do the videos still play, or do you observe any problem? Or are you just getting warnings, but all is good?
- Does it happen on all videos? On the screensaver only, or on the gamelists? Was it not happening before? An easy way to test it is to open ES, go to a gamelist, see if a couple of videos render, and then exit. See if there are those logs. With the current and the old one. Then try the same with loading ES and just playing the screensaver (press "Select" on the System View screen). Exit and see if you have those logs.
I've seen nothing concrete around that - some suggestions that it could be due to old versions of VLC, FFMPEG or LIBAV, or even the video formats, but I'd like to take this step by step.
Ideally it'd be great to have you separately load the same videos using VLC on the terminal, and seeing if you get the same messages. First without any options, and then with the "--subtitle" option pointing to a non-existing file. And then pointing to an existing subtitle file.
Just to narrow it down.
Thank you very much and sorry for the trouble!

All is fine, I only observed the messages after exiting emulationstation. I invoked it from commandline, then those messages were right above the prompt.
- Does it happen on all videos?
I'm afraid it doesn't happen on all videos. I'll repeat the tests, wait a moment...
-
@meleu Wonderful. So, screensaver works, did you recompile the latest build? Does it render well in the highest quality? And when you select the option to show the game name, does it work well as well?
Great.
Just want to check whether, for those same videos, it also happens on the command line - which would mean it's a VLC thingie. You wouldn't per chance know if it happened before either?
I just pushed an update to my branch to see if it helps with that message - if you have the patience to reupdate and recompile, let me know.
Thank you very much - have a great Sunday! Also, it must be quite late for you :|
-
@pjft sorry man. Those messages is something related to the file. It happens with the official RetroPie ES and when I launch vlc from command line too. I'm afraid it has nothing to do with your changes.
Like this:
[prompt]$ vlc ~/RetroPie/roms/mastersystem/snap/Alex\ Kidd\ in\ Miracle\ World\ \(USA\,\ Europe\).mp4 VLC media player 2.1.6 Rincewind (revision 2.1.6-0-gea01d28) [0x1810118] main libvlc: Executando o VLC com a interface padrão. Now a quote from a friend:
"A false positive is better than a bug to fix."
Oh, by the way, I saw that sentence from Leiradel, the guy who implemented RetroAchievements in RetroArch. He moved from Rio and is living in Lisbon currently.

I will give more attention to the screensaver now...
@pjft said in Help testing: Random Video Screensaver on Main Branch:

I'm still deciding if it's too late or too early. :-)
My youngest is sick and now he is awake watching Pocoyo. The good news of the Sunday is that he is recovering... :)
Cheers!
-
@meleu Not a bother - good to hear that it's not a bug on my end then. Thank you very much for your time! And indeed, Leiradel had it right ;)
So sorry to hear that your youngest is sick - hope he gets better soon :/ Thankfully mine haven't been that bad, health wise, in the recent months. The 3-y/o one is now on antibiotic, but so have my wife and I been in the past few weeks, so it must be something that's going around, can't blame him.
Hope he recovers soon! :)
If he likes buses and such, I can also strongly recommend "Tayo the Little Bus", and "Pororo the Little Penguin" - mine like those as well, in addition to Pocoyo. You can find them on YouTube!

@pjft tested here. Everything seems to be fine. Here is a screenshot to let you see how the name is displayed:
One thing that worth to mention: while the video is playing and I press right-arrow key, the screen goes back to ES and then fade to black and then starts the next random video. Not a big problem for me, though.
