I want to start my Pi from X and launch RetroPie/EmulationStation on an as need basis.

I'm running Raspbian 4/10/17 release, and installed RetroPie via Git. I don't want to use a preloaded RetroPie image because I'm doing lots of other things on my Pi and only casually game once in a while, I usually want to start in X directly rather than EmulationStation, and I already have plenty of packages loaded in Raspbian and don't want to have to redo all of that in a new image.

My Pi after installing RetroPie loads up X and then after a few seconds goes to console logged in as pi, I have to press ALT-F7 to go back to X.

Where is RetroPie making that happen during boot?

Also is there a way to get EmulationStation/RetroArch to let go of the ALT-F7 key so I can switch back and forth between my X session?

I set the autostart config in RetroPie Setup to boot to desktop btw, it boots to desktop and then after a few seconds goes to console.

Also I just renamed /etc/system.d/system's autologin service, that got it to stop logging in, but it still cuts to console a few seconds after being in the X session. Trying to find where that's happening so I can get it to stop.

Fixed: Don't run RetroPie Setup from EmulationStation, because EmulationStation doesn't want you to run as root and you need root to do the autologin changes. Sudo and run the RetroPie Setup from cmdline and then change your autoboot, everything's peachy now.
