MAME ROW stands for MAME Random Of the Week. We randomly select an arcade game from the 0.78 MAME Reference Set to play on the week. The idea is to play games we've never played before, interact with other forum members, post hi-scores, share game strategies, fun facts, and (the most important) HAVE FUN!
Notes:
-
We usually post hi-scores screenshots after playing with only one credit. If you used more than one credit, please mention it on your post.
-
There's no need to use RetroPie to join the MAME ROW! You can play it on any platform you want.
Every Monday we create a topic at the "General Discussion and Gaming > MAME Random Of the Week" forum section with the 3 random games to be voted. And on Wednesday we check the result.
These "rules" are constantly being improved!

Some initial impressions: Rompers is a puzzle/maze-like game that isn't "easy" (you die a lot) but it's not really challenging either. I got bored pretty quickly.
Varth is cool, but wow, your first extra plane is at 600,000 points, second extra plane is at 2,000,000 and third is at 4,500,000!
Armed Formation has a ship that's just a hair too slow to get out of the way when you want to. I haven't seen any speed increasing power-ups in the brief time I played it, but the weapons were really interesting and it has that quirky Nichibutsu charm that I've grown to love.
It's going to be a tough choice this week.
-
@obsidianspider I tried them all and my vote goes to Armed Formation. I like the way we need to manage those "satelites".

Yes Armed Formation seems also to be my favourite. The gameplay is a bit slow but you die very fast >> tough game
Varth is indeed very cool, it's a typical CAPCOM shooter with nice sounds and excellent graphics. I think you can mark Varth as ARCADE Favourite (so I did) and play it later. I think it's not the right game for the MAME RoW because you can play it endless ;)
Rompers is a nice puzzler, you can kill the monster by upsetting walls on them. It can be also marked as Favourite and may be a good candidate for the MAME RoW this week
So I'm unsure if I gave my voice Rompers or Armed Formation :)
Nice game selection for this week... All three games are fine! -
Check here; do you think I'm trying to drive votes towards a specific game this week ?
:-D -

Yes! You have persuaded me to vote for Varth!
-
@backstander good (spontaneous) choice!
;-) -
Is bribery of any kind forbidden in the MAME RoW rules?
I'm really upset :D :D
Nice artwork btw ;) Is there also a artwork for Armed Formation? Not for me.... it's for a friend! -

Hmmm... sounds an excuse I already heard somewhere..
lolHaven't checked about available artwork to make the overlay. Let me have a look into this.
-
Yeah, Varth is pretty good too.
By the way, I found the Ryu on stage 4! :-)

Now there is: I just made it.
Quite challenging... including instructions translation from Japanese ;-)
Of course I expect "your friend" that asked for it, at least to post a screenshot here !!
Have fun!

This week's winner is Armed Formation
-
@UDb23 Well ... my pal is also a very good trick shooter - so stay tuned
crcerror
is our new competitor ;DThank you very much - you have done a nice artwork!
-
Here's a high score to get things started.
141,200
I haven't been able to determine what gives you extra lives, but they are available and the game isn't too stingy about handing them out.
Use the Formations often. There are plenty more of the power-ups in the game.
Stage 2 is a lot easier than Stage 1, but I died at the boss and had no more lives left at that point. I'm really liking this game.
-
@UDb23 My friend installed your bezel ;) Look beautifull - Thank you in the name of

@obsidianspider Yes that's the point! Armed Formation is really tough! But it makes fun as hell because the point system is not so bogus as in the CAPCOM shooters. So I prefered AF at first gameplay... Of course Varth is really cool - quick, sounds are massive and controlling is easy but it's not a game (imho) that got's that retro feeling. AF got's it and therefore I added it to my MAME RoW favourite folder. And 141k points seems a good base :)

I knew before the election results that I would had to travel to work last night. Then I had to bet wich game would win before the results and play hard to post some score.
Due to @UDb23 's marketing for Varth I thought it would win and then I tried hard on that game. Reached the stage 5 and got a decent score:
But last night I checked the parcial results and Armed Formation had 3 votes! My reaction: "Damn! I should have focused on this game!"
While I was waiting for the bus time I tried my best and I think I killed the first boss, but we died together...Here is my best score: 73600
Unfortunately I'll be away from my arcade cabinet untill next week... :(

OK, so what's a "Vowger"?
-
@obsidianspider I think it's just the ships name.
Captain Nemo got his Nautilus, Captain Picard got the spaceship Enterprise and Captain A. Formation got the Vowger ;)
Edit:
Yes the wiki article says the same: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formation_Armed_F -
Level 1 Tip:
Toward the end of Level 1 where Laser upgrades start showing up, if you still have your Bombs from earlier, don't upgrade to the Laser. The Bombs are much more effective up until the very final boss.
