help for a noob with the gpios setup

hello, im currently making a personal project, i want to connect the buttons to the GPIOS directly, so...here is my question.
im have 2 joysticks +16 buttons and im using retropie in the 4.2.8 version.
i can simply connect the gpios and when i shut on the retropie will detect me the 2 gamepads? or there is a previous step to do? help please, im not very good with this ^^u

You will need to look at supporting sw for gpio inputs, try 'gpioneer'
