Videos have no sound with audio_pwm_mode=2

I searched the forum and read the docs but I couldn't find a definitive answer to this.
I added audio_pwm_mode=2 to my config in order to eliminate audio hiss present in my system. It works great but for one thing: videos playing in the front end (i.e. preview videos while selecting a game) no longer have sound. All other sound works - UI clicks in the front end, sound in the games themselves, etc. Removing the line from my config fixes videos, but of course the hiss returns.
I have tried changing any options I can with no luck. Am I missing an obvious fix here?
