I have a Raspberry Pi 2, Emulationstation 4.2 installed, and an official raspberry pi power supply. I had it connected to an HD monitor with 16:9 aspect ratio. I switched and connected my pi to an old CRT TV I have with an AV cable from the headphone jack of the Raspberry Pi. In the resolution settings I have it set to auto. I had the Nes-mini theme installed but noticed the sides were getting cut off because of the 4:3 ratio, so I went into the themes menu in Retropie and updated the Nes-mini theme hoping to fix it. When I exited and returned to emulationstation, the theme had disappeared and black text on white background was all that was left. Other themes still load in 4:3 aspect ratio. I thought my problem would be solved by switching back to my HD monitor, but the theme still wouldn't load. I tried updating the theme in Retropie, which didn't work, so I uninstalled and reinstalled the nes-mini theme but it still didn't work. The same happened with the famicom-mini theme as well. Any help appreciated.

@herb_fargus Should I just upgrade all installed packages to do this, or is there a simpler way?

It was solved by updating all installed packages from the Retropie setup tool.
