Probably just got a dud because I find that most of the time those controllers aren't bad. I use Logitech F710 controllers and find they are a good one controller fits all solution for RetroPie. They most closely resemble a modern Playstation pad, but seem to use the Xbox 360 controller driver, lol.

@retrofreak89 get a q-tip and isopropyl alchohol. Scrub the contacts and the black part of the rubber pads that makes contact with the contacts on the board. There can be oxidization that you cant see by looking at it.

The XBox 360 d-pad is crap even when it is working correctly as intended. It's a terrible shame, since besides the d-pad, it's a great controller. All the other buttons and analog sticks are just fine.

Also, Microsoft has made Windows 10 require signed drivers but won't release proper signed drivers for the XBox 360 Chatpad, their own device. Shame on their stupid crappy driver signing scheme.
