Hard Time Getting MSX to Work
-
Hi! I'm new to RetroPie so please bear with me if I'm doing something stupid.
I've tried:
- BlueMSX: won't even start, just a black screen then back to RettroPie;
- OpenMSX: commands work, but I can't exit the emulator with Select+Start;
- fMSX: can exit the emulator nicely with Select+Start, but no controls.
Does anybody know how to obtain a working setup? Working controls AND being able to exit the emulator with the hotkeys?
Thanks!

@vegetus are your msx bios files in all caps like MSX.ROM? They have to be all in caps including the file extension (.ROM). If they dont work in the bios folder put them in the rom folder with the games. The ones you really need are:
MSX.ROM
MSX2.ROM
MSX2EXT.ROM
MSX2P.ROM
MSX2PEXT.ROM
MSXDOS2.ROM -
Hi, @edmaul69 ! Yes, they look just like that. Any other ideas? Thanks for replying.

I still don't have fully working MSX emulation either, though I have been able to launch and control one or two games. I use Blue MSX for my games. In your /home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS folder, you should see a folder called Machines. Go in there, and you should find folders for sorting the various system roms. The Blue MSX website also has resources for setting the correct configurations for the machines. That being said, my main problem appears to be actually selecting different machines. I think it always loads some sort of 'Default' MSX2 variant, which isn't always compatible with games. The PC version of the emulator has a way to select different systems, such as various machines from around the world that follow the MSX1 standard, MSX2 standard, MSX2+ standard, and Turbo-R standard, as well as a few oddities from Sega like the SG-1000, SC-3000, and SF-7000. I have been able to launch more games on my Windows PC due to being able to change systems like that, but I can't figure out how to change the machine being emulated on the RetroPie version. -
The Machines directory you mentioned look just fine in my filesystem. BlueMSX won't even start in my installation, which is a shame, because that would be my first choice of MSX emulator. Of course, if any of the other two worked, they would be just fine either.

@vegetus you cant exit openmsx with select and start. You have to press the document key on the right side of the spacebar and go to exit. You also save and stuff in there.

@edmaul69 My Raspberry Pi only has a PS3 controller paired with it, no keyboard or mouse, so that's troublesome for me. I'll just have to keep MSX emulation on the PC for now. :'(
