Best way to update?

Hello,
Short question for you advanced users. Is it OK to keep "Updating all installed packages" each time I want the latest build? Are there any adverse effects from this method over time? The trigger for this question was that my coworker mentioned his NES installation became "buggy" (not sure what exactly he experienced). He ended up installing from binary and all was well. Sound familiar? I sure would hate for things to go sour after an update (which is why we should back up our images regularly).
