      This has been bothering me for a while. I love playing arcade games through MAME or FBA, but having unlimited continues takes all the tension out of it. It just isn't fun to plow through a game with no fear of failing. So, you have to set some limits to how many continues you allow yourself, I figure. Or maybe you shouldn't use any at all. You can see where this is going, I'm sure. If you're like me and don't enjoy playing through arcade games with unlimited continues and hence no risk of failing, what limits do you set yourselves? I think I might go with one continue for every single game ... on the other hand, that might make some games too hard.

      So yea, what do you do?

        @jenslyn87 only one credit. Specially for MAME ROWs.

          @meleu Thanks for replying!

          That may be the best way to do it. But I wonder if there aren't many arcade games that are practically impossible to beat without using continues? Maybe not!

            For the most part, MAME games reset your score to 0 when you continue. There are also some games where this can be selected in the Dip Switch settings.

            So, for me, I consider the high score (achievable with one credit) to be the measure of ability to progress through the game. Extra credits can be used to see how far you can get, or to better practice some more challenging parts of some games.

            I'd say there are definitely a few games that seem to me to be impossible to beat without a continue or two, but maybe that's just because I'm not good enough at them.

              That makes two votes for judging your 'real' progress by how far you can get without continues! Thanks!

                @andrewh what Andrew said. Continues seem more for progressing in the game and seeing content you wouldn't be able to if you just 1 credit played. High scores are a seperate issue.

                Though this is coming from someone who just played frogger for the first time in years and died dozens of times and couldn't get passed the first level

                  So if you're playing a game with a friend, you normally stick to no continues?
