I used Rufus to create a bootable ubuntuMATE (ubuntu v16.04.3) SD card, and then I did the normal setup stuff. Ran sudo apt-get update and upgrade, and commenced to follow the guide verbatim. Each time i wait the 3 hours it takes, at the end, I get an error message that says

      Could not successfully build mupen64plus - N64 emulator MUPEN64Plus
      (mupen64plus-core/projects/unix/libmupen64plus.so.2.0.0 not found).

Emulation station wont start either and produces the following error (--debug option used):
      lvl2: EmulationStation -v2.7.4rp, built Jan 9 2018 - 19:45:08
      lvl2: Creating surface...
      lvl0: Error creating SDL window!
      Could not get EGL display
      lvl0: Renderer failed to initialize!
      lvl0: Window failed to activate

      Any ideas??

@optimal123 Are you starting ES from your X11 session ? Try running it from a terminal - without X11 started.

Re-install again the MUPEN64Plus package, just this one, from the RetroPie setup menu, then look in ~/RetroPie-Setup/logs for the last log file. Unpack it then upload its contents to pastebin.ubuntu.com.
Compilation probably fails, but in order to see why we'll have to look in the log file.
