Jump buttons not working correctly in NES emulators.
-
Greetings, forgive the sort of vague title.
I have a raspberry pi 2 that i just set up with retropie "for my kids" I am using a steam controller and have followed online instructions to configure it as an XBox controller.
Mostly this seems to be working well. However, I find that in the nes emulators, when I play games with jump buttons, (Duck Tales, Contra, Megaman) the jump button is just kind of making the character hop at a height that doesn't clear obstacles. This doesnt appear to be happening on the games for any other systems emulators.
It seems like the behavior I would expect for some kind of a turbo button feature, but the "shoot" buttons don't appear to be "turboing."
This makes all the platforming games unplayable. Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks

@wafflemanstan Have you tried configuring the steam controller as a keyboard? It's the other option in the driver setup.
Have you tried another type of controller to see what the behaviour using that is?I tried one afternoon recently to setup a steam controller to my liking. I just couldn't get it working the way I wanted. I gave up and went back to PS4 / 360wired. It may well be an issue with the driver but I never investigated any further because I had other options. I t was more just to see how it performed. I wasn't impressed.

@jonnykesh
I don't have another USB controller lying around, I was hoping to not have to buy any. I will look into setting it as a keyboard. Thanks. -
It sounds like it isn't handling the button as being held down but as a press and release after a preset time. I don't have any experience of the steam controller, so I couldn't confirm specifically what is causing it. Have you tried switching emulators to see if it is related to the specific emulator? There are 3 different emulators in the Retropie setup for NES according to the documentation.

@simonster I have tried different emulators and I get the same results for each NES emulator. I don't get the same results in SNES, or Gameboy emulators however.

are other nes games effected if not its probably how the games where made. Ie how long you hold the button down or how long you dont,

@wafflemanstan It would be weird if you were hopping in Contra 1 as this game isn't sensitive to holding the jump button longer..the jump height is always the same.

@wafflemanstan did you ever figure this issue out? I’ve been having the same problem and have checked turbo mode and it is off. Thanks!
