@ebkbk Just crap controllers imo..don't you have anything else to try out? f.e. xbox360 , ps3 or ps4 controllers. You should be able to input diagonals without adjusting anything.

@ebkbk If you want software support in the future then you will have to start with a fresh Retropie image from this site.
It could just as well be a problem with your Retropie system..no way to know untill you download and try a clean 4.3 retropie image. Or of course try a quality controller instead of the junk you bought from that seller. You got scammed either way.

@bobharris what do you suggest for a good controller to mimic the SNES?

@ebkbk I hear good things about the Buffalos,..and even better quality is 8bitdo.

Both the suggestions from @BobHarris are great options. Another solid choice would be using the original first party Nintendo controllers with a USB adapter.

@BobHarris @mediamogul @ebkbk The Buffalos have a phantom input issue. If you leave the controller connected and don't touch it, it will occasionally fire inputs spontaneously. This was disappointing to me as I bought two of them and they're both affected by it, plus they're not particularly cheap. I bought them from from different suppliers and the controllers are definitely geniune so it seems to be a design issue common to all Buffalo SNES-type controllers. Others online report the same issue. For this reason, I'd advise against the Buffalo controllers. Edit: just to clarify, this happens in Windows too, it's not specific to RetroPie, it's the controllers themselves.

That's a shame. It looks like you can dramatically decrease the phantom inputs, as discussed here, but as it stands it seems much better just to stay away.

Im using this adapter with snes/nes controller. Its ugly but it works out of the box.

Update: I bought 2 WII U controllers because they are the best... same thing. Xbox one control... same thing. Why can’t I have two directions at once?

@ebkbk Probably a problem with your image on the sd. Contact your ebay seller or start fresh: https://retropie.org.uk/download/ .

I'm faily certain that you can't walk diagonal in Zelda, that is the original Zelda on NES.

@lostless @Newellj79 you are correct, but Mortal Kombat and just about everything else the 2 buttons at once either stops any directions from happening or stays with the first pressed direction. I think you guys are right i am downloading a fresh image now and hopefully i will be okay.
