First off, I apologize for being a *nix nooby. I've tried a few different flavors in the past to use on older hardware but could never get them to work quite right. That being said, on to my 'issue' (assuming you can call it one)

I have the 1.39 MAME rom set that the github website states lr-mame2010 is supposed to use, but when I try to set lr-mame2010 as the default emulator, it only gives me the option for lr-mame2003 and then the game never loads and it hangs up on a black screen for a minute or two. How can I enable the option to use lr-mame2010?

There shouldnt really be any reason for you to use lr-mame-2010 unless there are specific newer games that you want but even then those are typically rubbish performance on the pi. your issue is likely an incompatible romset. don't believe the source you got it from, you will likely have to rebuild it with clrmamepro see here: https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Managing-ROMs if you do want lr-mame2010 you have to install it manually from the setup script and it takes hours to compile if it doesnt fail from lack of memory.

Well thank you for the information anyhow, I appreciate it. :)

I put everything in the documentation whether or not it is included in the stock image of retropie. New features and emulators are added all the time and can be easily installed from the setup script: https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Updating-RetroPie

and you dont have to delete the set you have, clrmamepro will rebuild it to make it compatible with other versions of mame as mentioned in the linked page above

@herb_fargus Well thank you. It's just kinda confusing for a noob, is there a list of the emulators someplace that ARE included with the stock image as opposed to can be added?

*edit reading through more here....... Ahhhh so I can actually install lr-mame2010 from the setup script area? Or no?

@mostlyharmless not really, the most common emulators are there by default but those also change from time to time (and likely will be changing quite a bit in the future) whichever rom folders are there you can be confident there is an emulator for that system to run those roms. you can see which are there for each system with the runcommand menu as your game starts and if there is one missing you can install it from the setup script. the most stable ones are already included with the image though. Anything listed as experimental in the documentation is not included by default.

There is also a website that maintains a "rollback" torrent that allows you to use clrmamepro to rollback to any previous version if you have the latest version. Basically it's a large file with all the changes through the years. I didn't use it for the longest time but it really is a handy tool to downgrade your ROM set to the needed version.

Thank you for all the assistance. I grabbed .78 and I'll use that instead. Any thing (MAMECLR) that you already state is difficult to use is probably NOT worth investing the time in for a one time setup for a quick mess around box attached to the TV. All I really wanted to do with my PI 3 was replace the HUGE 'media center' PC that has been taking up space in the living room with something that might play a couple of games and allow surfing on my slightly older app filled but not 'smart' TV.

Thank you again for the assistance and for all of your work on this project. I may tinker with it later and become proficient, but at this point I just want to plunk down and play some Galaga and Dig Dug. Thanks for the information on how to find out what is installed as default. I appreciate that as well.
