Mame - Player 2 control issue

Mame Version - 1.6.9 Mame 2003 0.78 (b682665)
Pi version 3I've got an issue with player 2 controls which is limited to Mame (other emulators work fine) Player 1 also works perfectly. The directions are off, you have to hold diagonal up and left to get it to move left for example. Seems very crooked like the character is drunk. I've had a look around the settings although I can't see any way of making an adjustment.
