      Hi all,
I'm currently thinking of running my roms over my network as I have had so many problems running roms from external hard drives due to the low power which the raspberry pi's give out of there usb ports.
Bigger sd cards or usb sticks are out the question as I have a large psx collection and quite a few Sega CD games I enjoyed in my younger days.
I currently have a 2tb hard drive plugged into my BT smart hub that we use for our network storage.
So what I want to do is try and use that setup but have a few questions I want to ask before I jump in and go ahead.
I've looked at the wiki and all seems straight forward except the part where it says user and password for the autostart.sh file, I don't need a user or pass for my network drive it just works freely over my network.
Secondly my pi 3 in question is in my conservatory currently used with the built in wifi and is around 8-10 meters away from my router, would this cause a problem or would I be better off using Ethernet over a homplug for example.
Lastly the hard drive plugged into the BT smart hub is formatted in ntfs this works fine for all our pc's and smartphones but would it be a problem for retropie.
      Thank you all in advance
      Rob

I guess you can omit the user and password in this case, if it's not password protected.

Using an Ethernet cable will always yield better results than Wifi, for the PI, but you can start by using the Wifi and setup your system, then test if loading times for the Emulationstation frontend and when launching the games (especially CD games) are appropriate.

Lastly the hard drive plugged into the BT smart hub is formatted in ntfs this works fine for all our pc's and smartphones but would it be a problem for retropie.

How are you accessing the networked drive ? File shares or other means (browser, etc) ? If it's file shares, then it's not a problem, RetroPie will be able to access it without any issues.

Ok thanks for your reply :)
Think I'll just go ahead and try it today see what happens.
In regards to the file sharing I'm not quite sure what you mean.
All I have to do is plug my hard drive into my router and it just automatically appears on my network with a address of \192.168.1.254\Shared_Disk
So using the drive on my Windows 10 computer I just select network and it's there, also the same with my file manager app on my phone, I just select local network and it appears :)
          Thanks

That looks like file sharing, so it shouldn't be a problem for RetroPie.

Ok so it appears is does not work directly from my hard drive attached to my router which I thought would be the case as these BT smart hubs are a pain in the backside.
              So onto the next step.
I also have a rpi3 setup on my network with samba shares, will retropie work with that or is there anything special I need to do to it.

              Thanks
              Rob

@robmcc83 What exactly doesn't work ? Maybe there's an error which can be fixed.

It will not mount the drive from my router.
I've had so many problems with this home hub with file sharing. I had the home hub 5 before which was easy as that used samba shares when connecting usb drives but this one does not.
I forgot before that when I first setup this drive on this new router I had to map the drive first using run on my computer and entering \192.168.1.254\ then I could select the folder I want to map for share.
It's strange sometimes it shows in network sometimes it don't. I Google it upon getting this new hub and there was others with same problem.
So think and for less stress for me lol I'm going to just migrate everything to samba shares on my other pi,
Is this still possible to share roms through samba.
                  Thanks
