Just started a build of a wooden handheld retropie machine... brass bullet buttons...
-
@newellj79 ... Super kind! - Made some mad progress this weekend... Fitting the electronics to the box now... im about two weeks in front with making and two weeks behind with videos... I'll continue to post up, but I'm worried someone will get angry that I'm spamming the forum!!... Did you see my arcade machine build - just completed...
-
@dubiousengineer I think I speak for all here that we would love to look over your shoulder as you build!
-
@dubiousengineer Great stuff man, I wish I had those skills! I'm using a modded PSP for portability, but I do miss some essential games on there that the PSP can't run (Street Fighter III and some N64 games most notably).
I'm looking forward to see the process and the end result! -
@glennlake ... Excellent! - Well, thats about where the camera sits in the shed... I have some cracking footage for you, and am working with some creators/musicians to help the viewing experience I hope!!... These kind words keep me motivated to publish!! :-)
-
@bobharris ... Some fun footage coming mate! - Thanks for your kind words, it keeps me motivated to publish ... and to stay on the retropie forum!!... lovely forum BTW!
-
@bobharris ... the electronics... the easy and fun bit!! ...
-
@dubiousengineer Making some good progress there!
-
I prefer this one for portability.
-
@bassman6805 ... oh wow and analogue sticks too !
-
Yes, but the analog is not true analog. It's only 8 way movement. I wasn't very difficult to make. I 3D printed the case and it's ok. I think if you had a really nice printer or could machine something it would be better. I like the larger screen compared to the pigrrl. If you want something portable I highly recommend making one. I made some changes to the original case design and uploaded them to thingiverse. The original seemed to thin and I had to really cram the wires together.
-
@bassman6805 Broke the wood... drilling a hole in the casing... had to glue it all back together :-( ... You should have head the bad words coming out of my mouth...
I'm beginning the think a 3d printed unit would make so much more sense... anyway... fixed now, so I will keep on...

latest build progress for those that care and have 5 mins spare to watch the video... I SPLIT THE WOOD :(
-
don't worry about the wood splitting. Scars add character/personality. :-)
Wood glue is amazing stuff, so I'm sure it will be fine. Also the wood gives the handheld a great retro look, which is a nice touch for a Retropie based system ! -
@dubiousengineer My sympathies for the mishap. I'm building an upright cab at the moment and I lost count of all the errors I would try to avoid in hindsight. :P But I came to terms with all of them so far, knowing that it's the work of my own two hands, being no handyman at all.
I wish you success in fixing the case. And like @BobHarris said, it may even add some rustic character. ;)
-
@bobharris ... I'm really nervous... I may end up going "steam punk!".... But that doesn't really fly with gaming ... does it?
-
@clyde ... any pictures of the build so far? - :-) ... I just made a bar-top... (Well, bodged together rather than made!)
-
@dubiousengineer Final fantasy has some Steampunk influences so you could go there. :-)

None I want to make public at this time. :*) But I'm planning to post an illustrated report here once it's finished, which shouldn't take more than 2 or 3 weeks from now on (I hope). Stay tuned.
I like the lean and practical design of your build. It's a welcome diversion from the typical bar-top look. In contrast, my upright looks very typical because it's a construction kit. ;)
And I like that you're apparently drinking some kind of dark beer in the video. o/ᵁ

@clyde ... gets my vote mate! ... looking forward to seeing your pictures!! - I do love real ale and have an affinity for JD - sometimes with coke! - Thanks for watching and your thoughts on the new build of the handheld games console are also welcome... all input is useful and leads to a better build!!
-
@bobharris ... super cool, I’ll have a look final Fantasy and probably use it to model the unit in photographs... maybe run a video of it.... thanks for your input! :). You get my vote! H
