I just got a pi 3 and I have everything set up and ready to go. The only controller I have is a wired 360. The controller will work fine if the menus, but it will not work on any of the games. I have searched for answers, but haven't really found anything. A few people have told me that I need to code it in, but I don't even know where or how to start with that. any help is appreciated. thanks

Have you looked on the https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Xbox-360-Controller/ page ? Did you install the xboxdrv to try and see if the controller is detected this way ?

There's no need to create a new post ever time one of your former posts isn't answered. It should work with xpad out of the box unless it's some janky controller or an insufficient power supply or some other thing. But since you didn't provide the details requested on the read me first page it's hard to help you.

If you read the documentation it will answer 99% of your questions: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/
