are you doing updates as root?
I have seen both the Pi and other linux machines give a 403 error when you try to do something that requires root access
-
@drakaen391 I'm not sure, it looks like regular command line to me. does SSH have anything to do with it?
-
nope... but updates must be done as root...
That means you must put "sudo" before the command
-
so, for example, if I wanted to update Retropie, I'd write
sudo update?
-
@tobas you would put
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade
the first will make sure the lists are up to date (should always be done before install or updates)
The next line is to update any outdated file including retropie
-
@drakaen391 could I download the image, transfer it over through my network connection and install it over my existing image?
-
@tobas nope, the new image is a full overhaul and requires a fresh install.
If you upgrade to 4.4 you would need to start very fresh
-
also, unlike a PC, the bios and other items for the Pi to run, is on the SD card... so its not possible to install fresh images like you would on a PC
-
@drakaen391 so...in order to upgrade, I would have to lose all my roms, saved games etc??
-
@tobas No, you could transfer those over to your PC or on an USB stick, then transfer them back on the new system.
-
@tobas Please post the info requested https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first
-
@mitu ah. so basically, pull my roms and bios folders out, overwrite the card with the new image, out bios and roms folders back?
-
@mitu I'm sorry, I'll post it when I get home. thanks for the help so far.
-
@drakaen391 I'm sorry I'm such a noob, but if I do the sudo apt-get upgrade, will that overwrite my entire SD card? or just update retropie?
-
@tobas it will only update the programs
-
@drakaen391 alright, well I'll try that first then before taking more drastic measures. thanks again.
-
@tobas what about the detail requested in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first? These are essential.
-
@rbaker I am work so I do not have those at the moment, I will post them later on
-
just doing a image backup and then I'll check all the details. thanks again fellas
-
