Recently I set up my MAME emulator to play outrun. To my genuine surprise, it worked great. After loading up some other roms I noticed that only about half of them actually accept controller input, the ones that do, like outrun, run great, but the ones that don't, like tapper, don't do anything at all. Any help would be massively appreciated.

Is it just Midway games you're having trouble with? 'Tapper' is a Midway MCR title and none of them have worked since MAME 0.78 was originally adapted into being a RetroArch core. You're in luck though, as after several years of this being the case, the issues have been resolved just this past month. However, you'll still need to wait for the updates to make their way to RetroPie.
