I hadn't noticed this, but since /boot on rootfs should simply be a link to the boot partition, why when I'm (experimentally) trying to get rootfs on a network drive, and whilst copying everything off, has /boot/boot.bak appeared, seemingly with the contents of a /boot partition.

This is whilst the sdcard containing retropie is connected directly to the computer doing the copying, and so is not mounted in the Pi (i.e. this is just a bare filesystem rather than a running system).
