Vertical Play Lags

I am building a cabinet specifically for vertical games like Pac Man, Donkey Kong, 1943 etc. I have RPi3b. Not plus. The images run great in horizontal orientation. But when I rotate via command line with "display_rotate=3", They lag considerably. I'm fairly new to Retropie. What can I do to improve the gameplay. I've already tries overclocking to 1300 with no avail. Thank you in advance for you help. I love the community!

@vertigo5oh Use Attractmode. It'll run vertical games without the need for display_rotate. No slow down either.

I’m doing the same, also with a RPI3b, and I don’t see any lag.
