I try to boot my pi 3 for the first time with retropie 3.8 and always got this error on first boot
panic vfs unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(179.2)
i try to format my microsd card again and again and put retropie 3.8 and always the same message
please help me.thank you !

@redwater64 probably a bad SD card. Try formatting it with sdformatter just in case. Also possible it's being written wrong , could be a few things.

i tried with 2 differente sd card 1 sony 32gb sdhc class 10 40mb/s and 1 lexar 32gb sdhc class 10 95mb/s with retropie 3.8 and i follow exactly the wiki/first installation video with exactly the same programme for everything... i don't understand what happen

Hello, I have the same problem and can't find how to solve it.
I have a Raspberry Pi 3 and followed the Installation instructions, installed retropie-v3.8.1-rpi2_rpi3.img with Win32DiskImager.
The issue isn't from the SD card it works flawlessly with Recalbox. I tried with another SD card and have the same issue.
I deleted every partitions on the SD card with MiniTool Partition Wizard and formatted with GUI FAT32 Format.
I'm on Windows 7.Please help me I don't know what to do.

i have exactly the same problem, Raspberry PI 3 Model B
Formated the memory card 2 times and rewrrite retropie-v3.8.1-rpi2_rpi3.img to it

Now i switched to a new microSD 32gb samsung card and did the same procedure, and now it worked, so probably a bad sd card.
