Exploring the jungle
-
For no particular reason I am in the mood for playing games about daring explorers rushing through the jungle with the pith helmet and all. I was looking for games in the 16-bit-ish age and before (so no Lara Croft), and off the top of my head I could only think of Pitfall (Atari2600) and Sabre Wulf (Spectrum). Does anyone know of any other games with that theme for the NES, SNES, sega or any other system of that time?

@svmariscal It's 32 bit but still a 2d platformer; did you ever play Oddworld abe's oddysee? You start out in a factory but after that it's one beautiful natural environment after another, filled with all kinds of traps and hostile creatures.
But maybe it's not close enough to your description (he's not wearing a helmet for one ;) )..anyways it's always the game that comes to my mind when talking about platformers in a natural setting.

"Tusker" by System3, but only for home computers (C64, Commodore Amiga, Atari ST, maybe Amstrad CPC)
never heard about a NES/SNES/SMS/Genesis version -

'Pitfall!' has been king of the jungle adventure games ever since the 2600. Although the NES release of 'Super Pitfall' was a huge misfire, the good people at BIT INK STUDIOS set about reworking the entire game to bring it more in line with the original classic. The resulting 'Super Pitfall 30th Anniversary Edition!', is a beautiful looking 8-bit game and is much more fun to play.
'Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure' was released for nearly every major 16-bit system in 1994. The SegaCD version was the one I owned and due to the CD format, it contained better music, better sound effects, expanded levels and some secrets that I wouldn't want to spoil. I also have a great fondness for 'Pitfall 3D: Beyond the Jungle' (PSX) and 'Pitfall: The Lost Expedition' for the sixth generation consoles, but they fall outside of your pre-3D mandate. Still, if you're a Bruce Campbell fan, you owe it to yourself to take a look at 'Pitfall 3D: Beyond the Jungle', as the chin himself does the voice acting for Pitfall Harry Jr. and has some great lines.
All that said, for my money, it doesn't get any better than Harry Senior's second outing on the 2600, 'Pitfall II: Lost Caverns'. Out of the hundreds of 2600 games released, it's arguably the best by any given metric. It's got great music and graphics, it's a technical marvel for the system with it's expansive world layout and progressive save points, but most of all, it's just a lot of fun to play.

Arcade: Spelunker
It was ported to the Atari 8-bit family, Commodore 64, NES, Arcade, MSX, Wii (Virtual Console), 3DS (Virtual Console), and Wii U (Virtual Console).
Rick Dangerous came out for the Amiga, Atari ST, Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, MS-DOS based PCs and even the Gameboy Advance. It's a great spelunking game.
A modern successor in the spirit of those games is Spelunky for Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and Chrome OS.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions ;)

Pith Helmet, Jungle, has to be Sabre Wolf on the 8 Bit Spectrum/C64 and Amstrad.
