Retropi 3.8.1 Pi3 TFT white screen issue.

Hello everyone,

Let me start by saying I work in IT and i'm comfortable with editing config files ssh and all that good stuff. So please don't hesitate to throw out something "advanced".
i'm new to the pi scene, so maybe not too advanced :(

Anyways, i'm having trouble getting the TFT screen I purchased to display Retropi. I am able to get Retropi working with my monitor via HDMI, but not with the TFT screen. The screen just stays white.

Here is my setup.

1 x PiTFT - Assembled 320x240 2.8" TFT+Touchscreen for Raspberry Pi[ID:1601]

1 x Raspberry Pi 3 - Model B - ARMv8 with 1G RAM[ID:3055] = $39.95
1 x 5V 2.4A Switching Power Supply w/ 20AWG 6' MicroUSB Cable[ID:1995] =

I'm using SD card (SanDisk Extreme 64GB MicroSDXC UHS-1 Card with Adapter (SDSQXNE-064G-GN6MA)), i'd link you to the amazon page, but i'm not sure if this forum is okay with that.

Anyways, I have followed this guide to the T. (https://learn.adafruit.com/running-open ... itft-setup)

I cannot "enable device tree" without going to the /boot/config file and adding the text manually. last time i did this however, it bricked the OS :(.
see attached image.. I see no "device tree" in advanced options.

I think the issue is i'm not setting the correct screen type. Currently i'm using dtoverlay=pitft28-resistive-overlay,rotate=90,speed=80000000,fps=60
I tried both in the guide. Both did not work.

I'm at a loss... i think maybe retro pi does not work with this tft screen and the pi 3. I'm not sure :(

Please any suggestions would be appreciated, I want to build an handheld emulator as my first of many projects.

If you need more info please let me know.. I will give you all that I can!

@jayfry I don't have a 2.8 screen but I do have a 3.5 tft from adafruit. I never tried it on a pi3 befor so I installed retropie 3.8 on it and was able to set up the screen using adafruit's guide. I would double check the /boot/config.txt for the correct HDMI settings. Fat-fingering something there can cause it not to display on the tft screen. Also about the Device Tree.
