Psx emulation is bad
-
Hi everybody, I am running retropie on a laptop running ubuntu.
My pc is 64x, and I can say is quite powerfull enough. Is a today 600euro laptop, lenovo ideapad 320.
I am able to run psp games on 4x graphics perfectly, dreamcast is running well too and the gamecube with low settings works fine.
So because of this I am not really understand why the psx, who is an older system who require nothing to run well, is very difficult to run on my pc.
I am using psx beeetle emulator, if I set the graphic on resolution on 2x the audio and the frame rate get down so much, playing a bit with the option I am able to play 2x enough well but not perfect. If I set on 4x everything become a mess.
So why my pc can run more powerfull systems so well, but the psx emulation go so bad?

Define 'bad' - what's the problem you're seeing ? Slowdowns, graphic corruption, audio glitches ? Also, please mention the system and the RetroPie version you're using - https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first

I am running version 4.4.1 on retropie, using beetle psx emulator.
For bad I mean frame rate get down drastically if I put 4x resolution with conseguence of the audio doing a lot of noise playing the game music.
I tryed to change the options, but I dont really know what I am doing. My pc is powerfull enough for the psx emilator, the other more powerfull systems work so well, so I dont know what to do -
@tackskull What OS are you using ? What video card ? What version of emulator ?

Because it is not about how powerful the original system is, it is about how the emulator was designed (see http://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/High/Low_level_emulation), beetle-psx is more on the LLE side, i would recommend pcsx-rearmed instead if your computer is not fast enough.
Emulators generally don't care about the cpu generation, the number of cores, ..., they only care about cpu frequency : if your cpu is at 2.4Ghz, for beetle-psx your computer is as good as a 2.4Ghz single core pentium from 15 years ago, which is kinda crappy to run this emulator.@tackskull said in Psx emulation is bad:

ppsspp (psp), reicast (dreamcast) and dolphin (gamecube) all include HLE stuff.
