Pi wont boot after Retro Image

This is my first time using a raspberry pi or retro. I followed the tutorial to a T and when I plug the SD card back into the Pi the red power light turns on but the ACT light does nothing. I reinstalled NOOBs and it fired up right away. Any idea what I could be doing wrong?

@whyte-out How did you write the image to the card ? What model of Raspberry Pi are you using. and what image did you write ?

Im using a Raspberry Pi 3 V B. Win32imager was used per the tutorial and Retropie-4.4 per the download recommendation.

@whyte-out Did you unzip the file first ? You can try to write the image using Ether - in this case you don't need to unzip the file first.

When I download the image it didnt download in a zip file. It downloaded with a .img.GZ tag. I thought the .GZ was weird so I tried writing the image with the .gz and without. I used SDImage writer per tutorial recommendation.

@whyte-out The .gz extension means the image is compressed, you have to un-compress it first if using Win32DiskImager. This is described in the installation docs - there's even a video tutorial included on the page (updated yesterday by the great @herb_fargus !). I don't know which tutorial you followed, but it's either missing an important step or you didn't follow all the steps.

@whyte-out If you are using winrar, you can right-click and extract it. It will extract the .img, and you can flash that to the card.

I used 7zip and Mitu you were correct. I was not unzipping that image file. I guess I have been out of touch for awhile. I didn't realize the .gz was a zip tag. It booted just fine after I did. Thank you for the help. Appreciate it.

Pro tip: use etcher. Doesn't require extraction
