HDMI to RGB for CRT?

Hey all!
I was wondering if anyone had adapted retropie to output original resolution (240p) over RGB.
Hardware wise, I figure you could go HDMI - VGA then VGA to BNC. Beyond that, not sure what would be needed!
Thoughts?

You don't want to use composite cables (480i)? What you suggest would introduce a lot of processing which will cause lag.

Actually the Raspberry already has native support for RCA...
You need a 3.5mm to RCA plug only to do this

Yeah I was aware of that.
I have a CRT monitor that can take RGB. Composite isn't super great, quality wise, I was just wondering if it was possible! :)

It is... With the adaptor cord... Otherwise your sound will suffer not to mention video

@gt4chuck it is... It's just like the 3.5 mm cables a lot of digital camcorders use...
I haven't tried the ones for my cameras on the pi, but that is what the 3.5mm port on the pi is for... According to the pi foundation (the designer of the board)

It's not, it's just composite as you've rightly deduced. I think someone just got confused between component and composite video.

Yeah, probably the only way, HDMI to VGA convertor, and then a downscaler to RGB signal for your CRT. There's gonna be latency and all the bits to do that would cost more than the Pi.

If you don't need the GPIO pins for anything else and you're not afraid of a bit of soldering (or know someone who could do it for you) you could use a Gert VGA Adapter.
This will avoid any latency problems that might be caused by HDMI to VGA converters and any screen mode limitations they might have. It only outputs 18 bit colour but that's unlikely to be much of a problem if you're mainly emulating earlier systems - SNES hardware only uses 15 bit colour for example.
You can configure the Pi to output 240p modes directly via this adapter. There's a thread on the Raspberry Pi site with details.

Someone found a direct HDMI to component (RGB?) adapter from Radioshack, might be worth a try. If it works, it's a pretty easy $40 240p solution.

thanks! that's definitely closer... I think the hurdle is getting the pi to kick out 240p, isn't it?

The hdmi port actually supports native 240p over mode=8. I am trying to get it over component.
Here is 240p over hdmi to vga to an arcade cab.
