OpenBOR 6xxx OpenBeta Testphase
-
@zerojay I am running a Pi3b+, I've installed the RetroPie-Extras script, gone to RetroPie-Setup, Manage Packages, Manage Experimental Packages, 132 openbor, install from source (install from binary is not an option), and I get this error:
Could not install package(s): libpng12-dev.
Here's a screenshot just before it fires that message (I am not a linux wiz):
What am I doing wrong here? How do I install this dependency?

OK I did more poking around...removed holds on all apps, uninstalled apps, reinstalled apps, used apt-get, and finally used aptitude...which presents an interesting conflict...
So I'm completely blocked at this point. I don't know what's going on here or how to resolve it. Any help would be appreciated as I am just DYING to get these OpenBor games working on this.

Resync and try again. I just pushed a dependency change for you.

@zerojay I updated the RetroPie-Setup script, re-cloned the RetroPie-Extras repo and ran the script. Went through RetroPie-Setup, selected OpenBor, install from source, aaand got the same exact issue as before.

I've done all I can do. The problem is on your end if you are still having this problem after I've corrected the dependency.

@zerojay I was able to run your script and install v6510 though now when I run openbor And select a game I get a message that there is no configuration. Would there be a step I missed to point the games to v6510?

Need more info.
-
@asanchez81 If you installed zerojay's script properly, you should be able to launch directly into a pak rather than have to go into openBOR first. Where did you place your pak files?
-
Good work on the script @zerojay, thanks!
I did run into a bit of bother getting it working initially and it took a few attempts to get it sorted so here's a bit of info just in case anybody else runs into the same issue.
The first couple of times I ran the 6510 script, I'd end up with openbor appearing under the ports folder and es_systems.cfg wasn't automatically updated to include an openbor entry.
At this point, I wasn't sure if this was the intended result so I manually added an entry into es_systems.cfg and stuck a few .paks in /roms/openbor. This resulted in the system appearing in ES but launching a rom just opened the pak selection menu rather than starting the selected game.
In the end, I got it to work by deleting the openbor.sh script from the ports folder (/home/pi/RetroPie-Setup/scriptmodules/ports) prior to running the 6510 script as I suspected that the ports script was inadvertently being invoked.
This time no openbor folder was created under ports and the script did add an entry into es_systems.cfg. I just had to make a small tweak to es_systems.cfg to include the extensions & fullname:
<extension>.PAK .pak</extension>
<fullname>OpenBOR</fullname>I wasn't sure if the roms/openbor folder would be generated by the script but it needs it be added manually. Anyway, added a few .paks and they launch directly from ES now :)
One question I did have was about the Logs, Paks, Saves & Screenshots folders which have been created under /home/pi. Is there a config file that can be tweaked to change the location of these just so I can keep things tidy? No biggie if not!

Do you guys use a keyboard for exiting OpenBOR games? Can the controller be used?
-
@greenhawk84 You can use either. There's an "exit game" option in the main menu of every openBor game.
-
@greenhawk84 Aye, you’ll have to use the keyboard to set up the controller the first time you launch a game. You can save the changes in the config menu, this will apply the controller settings to all games.
-
@agboju_logun okay thank you, I use the Xin-Mo USB controller for my Arcade cabinet and OpenBOR games would be super awesome if I could get them as their own system and have them use the control panel instead of a keyboard.

Hello, I am not very good at the SSH aspect of Retropie, but I think I did the Extras installation correctly by just copying the commands from Zerojays github into my Putty screen, it seemed to do something.
cd ~
git clone https://github.com/zerojay/RetroPie-Extra.git
cd RetroPie-Extra/
./install-extras.shAnd then I went into the Retropie setup menu from Emulationstation and ran the install openbor from Source. It added OpenBOR to the Ports menu and launched into the OpenBOR paks menu. I know this is not the intended outcome to do it, so I wonder where I went wrong?
-
Okay, so I got a little farther by noticing there were two openbor.sh files in my folders, so I deleted the older one and kept the one dated today. I found openbor number 20 in my experimental packages and installed it. It ran this screen:
But then when I went to look for openbor in my roms folder, there wasn't a folder. So I made one and placed a .pak file in it, but it still did not show in my ES main menu.
-
@greenhawk84 You're almost there - I had the same issue. Removing that old openbor.sh file was the right thing to do. Make sure emulationstation is closed before proceeding to the next step.
The next thing you need to do is edit /etc/emulationstation/es_systems.cfg to add the pak extension for openbor. See this other separate thread with an example.
Again you'll want your pak files to be under /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/openbor/
Launch emulationstation again.
Launch an openbor game through emulationstation with a keyboard and gamepad connected, go into options, map the inputs, then you can use the controller exclusively. You will have to do this for each pak separately - there's no universal input mapping for openbor as far as I know.
-
@greenhawk84 Yup, same probs here too. You should be sorted if you follow Ben's post.
I saw your reply on the Streets of Rage Remake thread regarding the widescreen option. As per my comment on there, it didn't run great on my 3b+ but I've been playing Streets of Rage 2X tonight on OpenBOR and it looks really nice in widescreen mode, especially with the 16-Bit 2X filter on, so maybe have a look at that once you get everything set up. The latest version is v2.2 but that crashed for me so I went with the 1.6 (Lite) version and no probs so far, plays really nice.

That's odd mate, are you having to set up your controller for each pak? I've only had to do it the once following the 6510 install... not looked into why, maybe some wizardry going on :)
I'm sure last time I built my rpi, when there were separate 6xxx and 3400 OpenBOR packages, I updated a script to avoid having to set up my controller for each game. It'll be documented in one of the threads on here.
-
WOW! I got it! I have been wanting this for so long. Thank you so much for the help! Is it just me or are the instructions to get this running not exactly complete? I did see the OpenBOR entry in es_systems.cfg, but the extension and such was incomplete. Again, this is crazy now! What settings do you guys use? Do you keep OpenGL etc?
-
@greenhawk84 Nice one! The only thing I've changed besides my controller settings was setting the 16-Bit 2X filter.
I agree that the instructions for this method could do with a couple of extra steps adding given a few of us have hit the same problems.
@cyperghost would you be happy to update the first post to include these additional steps for the "Install via RetroPie-Extras" method please?
Extra pre-install step:
- Delete the ports openbor.sh that comes as part of the RetroPie setup (/home/pi/RetroPie-Setup/scriptmodules/ports) prior to running the 6510 install script.
Extra post-install steps:
- Create the roms/openbor folder manually
- Update the OpenBOR entry in es_systems.cfg to include:
<extension>.PAK .pak</extension>
<fullname>OpenBOR</fullname>
