My power supply is the original I got with my pi and has worked perfectly for several years. suddenly now I get flashes of the bolt and my game will slow down for a few seconds before everything goes back to normal. no overclock or any other tweaks. using a standard 4.4 image.

Lightning bolt = undervoltage, hence the slowdown because the Pi underclocks itself. Have you changed anything to your system lately ? Different power socket, changed any power cable, added a new device ? If not, then maybe your power source has problems.

none of the above. I think? I might have changed some settings that were suggested in the github article about reducing input lag, but AFAIK I only did that in the NES core
