I would say Dualshock 3 or Xbox One S controllers since they work via bluetooth and wired.

@stepea This depends on many factors. What consoles are you emulating? How important is wireless play vs input lag to you? How much money are you able to spend? There are many good options, but there is no perfect all in one solution.

@Beldar for me, everything depends on what game you will play... The six button Sega Genesis controller is the best for Street Fighter, any four button is good for KOF or Super Mario World, any controller works fine for Sonic the Hedgehog, for anything else Dualshock or XBox controllers are best.

            It's no use!!! Take this!!!

I like the Wii U Pro controller's layout with the analog sticks on the outer edge of the control field. So, I am happy with my wireless Wii U Pro controller clones from Qumox. They are well made and sturdy, and their rechargeable batteries last quite a while. But I had to connect them via a Mayflash Wii U Pro bluetooth adapter, because the controllers got ghost inputs when connected to the Pi's own bluetooth port.

I'm probably after something of an arcade stick - don't like controllers with a d-pad.

@stepea Then I can recommend the Mayflash Arcade Sticks. I have the predecessor of the F500.
