This is on a Pi 2. I have a PS4 DS controller all paired and showing up in both bluetoothctl and hcitool. Pressing the PS button the light flashes three times an I get in bluetoothctl:

      [NEW] Controller 00:19:86:00:14:49 retropie [default]
      [NEW] Device 1C:96:5A:53:C1:C3 Wireless Controller
      [CHG] Device 1C:96:5A:53:C1:C3 Connected: yes
      [CHG] Device 1C:96:5A:53:C1:C3 Connected: no

Pressing PS gets the same connected yes/no message.

Any idea how to get the controller to stay on?

Found it. Forgot to trust the controller in bluetoothctl:

        [bluetooth]# trust 1C:96:5A:53:C1:C3
        [CHG] Device 1C:96:5A:53:C1:C3 Trusted: yes
        Changing 1C:96:5A:53:C1:C3 trust succeeded
        [CHG] Device 1C:96:5A:53:C1:C3 Connected: yes

        It now stays on.
