Fix Emulation Screen Scaling to 16:9
-
Hi Everyone. Here is an issue I've been struggling with. All the emulators I use render the screen to a fixed 4:3 aspect ration, and though this is preferred by a great many people, I prefer not to have the black borders. I got around this to setting my Samsung TV to the "Wide Fit" setting, however the EmulationStation menu appears somewhat distorted and cut off when I do this. I have recently discovered that by pressing the "Select + X" combination on the controller that I can force the screen to 16:9 in the video settings. I would like to set this globally and save it that way, but for the life of me I can't find a straight answer online on how to do this. Can someone fill me in on either how to do this in the RetroArch menu, or to modify the retroarch.cfg file to accomplish this goal? That would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

@drake999 in the documentation as usual: https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Configuration-Editor

@herb_fargus Thanks for the info, but I don't think this is quite what I had in mind.

@drake999 it is.

For those of you who are interested and a facing a similar problem I was able to resolve the issue myself by navigating the the "Retroarch" option in the Retropie menu of Emulatationstation and creating a new config after I switch the aspect ration from core controlled to 16:9. I then saved it as a new config. I then exited emulationstation with Ctrl + F4 and launched LXDE with startx. I opened a terminal and typed sudo leafpad to run leafpad as root, then navigated to the location of retroarch.cfg in the "all" folder. I don't remember the exact path but a simple google search will reveal its location. I opened retroarch.cfg in leafpad, then saved it as retroarch-old.cfg. I then opened my custom config file in leafpad and overwrote the original retroarch.cfg with it. This is a sloppy and roundabout workaround, but it did the job.

The link herb_fargus gave above would do this in a much more efficient way (even on a per system basis).
That aside, you'll be left with some very distorted games if you force 16:9 on them all.If you dont like the black borders, you could use an overlay that fills it in like this:

@Floob Thanks for the info. I know purists prefer the original aspect ratios, but I prefer my games utilize the entire screen. So far any distortion hasn't bothered me, but black borders do. Call it a personality quirk I guess. I'm not saying what I wanted is for everyone, but I shared my solution for those out there like me who would just rather use their whole screen from everything.

@Floob I should also add that I'm not terribly interested in filling the black boarder regions with spiffy graphics since I have a plasma TV susceptible to burn in.

@drake999 have you tried to set the Aspect Ratio to 16:9 in Configuration Editor? Worked for me.
