help, editing font files

hi guy's, goes anyone know if its possible to extract the characters of a font, edit them with an image editor, then add them back into the .ttf or similar font file?

I found stuff, but you wont be able to edit it with photoshop :(
ttf uses something called vector, and is not that easy to edit
inkscape is a free program that can edit vectors https://inkscape.org/
