I tried different roms and all seem to have the same issue. Just a couple sounds work I read previous posts on the same issue and didn't understand about adding sample sounds or something. Does someone know where to get the correct rom? Thanks in advance

Is the Mario.zip file in the samples folder? With your rom set there should have been a sample folder with various zip files, but them all correct sample folder.
I assume you read the wiki on getting started, since you didn't provide the relevant information that you are asked to when asking for support I don't know what emulator core you are using for your Arcade games. For example if using mame2003, look here: https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/lr-mame2003 and pay attention to the samples section, clearly explains what to do.

@jakejm79 I did read it but don't really understand how or where to type all that stuff in. My friend helped with the install of game packs so I am pretty lost at this point since he is not available now to help. I think I had to run under something different than mame 2003 and 2010 because it kept crashing or freezing the system. Ill check when I get home.

Download the Mame2003 romset (if you plan on using Mame2003). Inside that zip file should be a folder called samples. Extract that folder then copy its contents (should be a bunch of zip files) to the \home\pi\RetroPie\BIOS\mame2003\samples\ folder.

@jakejm79 thanks. I got the roms but now don't have a program on my computer to open it to see them.

WinRAR or 7zip should be able to handle the downloaded archive, but most modern OSes have support for zip files built in.

@jakejm79 ok. I finally got the right set downloaded. Now on my retropie my arcade games Are all under "Arcade" there is nothing under "mame" at all. So should I just put the folder with mariozip in the mame folder along with all the sample sounds? Or should I put just the sounds in with the arcade folder? Because I have the mario game already in the arcade folder. But I'm not sure of the emulator that lets it start up with missing sounds..thanks so much
