Splashvideo cuts off after 10 sec

I'm using Retropie 3.8.1 on a Raspi 2 and have the following issue:
The splash video cuts off into a black screen after about 10 seconds, then its black for a few seconds until the white ES loadingscreen shows up.
The file is *.mp4, I've tried different videos from different sources, so... it's not the video file
I have altered the sleep timer in "asplashscreen" already from 1 to 5, with no change
Any suggestions?
