I intend to buy a pi 3 B+ and set up Retropie but I have some doubts about the controllers. I intend to be playing with a friend with our two DS4 controllers wirelessly from the couch. Is the connectivity going to be a problem?

In other words, we'll be using both controllers at the same time paired with Bluetooth, about 3-4 meters from the device, are we going to have problems?

Not likely, since the 3B+ has a better Bluetooth radio then previous models and it shouldn't need a BT USB dongle. You can always get a BT dongle and use it with your system afterwards, if you don't feel they're working fine.
