      So I recently updated my setup script and did a scrape of new ROMs but this has caused crashing on quite a few games. They are mostly N64, which prior to updating were running smooth. They crash on the black screen prior to loading where you get the opportunity to choose the emulator. Then it just hangs on that screen.

      Pi 3 B
      Retropie 4.4
      Retropie setup script 4.4.5
      Power bank 5v 2A - not the official power source but was working fine prior to update.
      Error logs - don't appear unless I can exit out of ES, which I cannot when it crashes.
      No USB attached
      Bluetooth 8bitdo controller.

      Any idea or more info required?

        @goobatroopa Anything in /dev/shm/runcommand.log that signals an error ?

          @mitu I tried looking after it crashed serveral times but when I typed the command nothing was there. I tested it on an arcade game that I know doesn't work, exited ES and the error log was present, so I know the logging is working ok. But when it crashes and I cannot exit other than turning off the machine, the log is not present. If that makes sense.

            @goobatroopa I see. If yo have a PC around, you can enable SSH and connect to the Pi to see either the log or to kill the process so you'll not have to shutdown with a simple power off.
            What emulator are you using for N64 ? Is it default Mupen64Plus or you're using lr-mupen64plus ?

              @mitu think I'm using default mupen64plus with gles2n64.
              I will try the PC advice and report back, hopefully with error logs.

                So this is all that there is in the log;

                Parameters:
                Executing: /opt/retropie/emulators/mupen64plus/bin/mupen64plus.sh mupen64plus-video-n64 "/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/n64/Super Mario 64 (USA).n64"

                Also just to confirm, it is only N64 which are not working.

                  @goobatroopa There is no error in the log. Can you try re-updating just the mupen64plus package from the RetroPie-Setup (if you didn't already) and see if it's any difference ?

                    @mitu no difference I'm afraid.

                      @goobatroopa Can you try Mario64 using a different emulator like lr-mupen64plus or one of the other graphics plugins? Might help narrow down the issue. Also perhaps check the runcommand menu to make sure you didnt accidentally select an unsupported video mode.

                        @quicksilver how do I change the emulator if I can't access the menu when the game launches?

                          More info, I get a random white dot appear in the top left hand corner just before it crashes. Thought this might be under voltage but checked on official power supply, still the same.

                          On other games, it gets to the runcommand menu, won't allow access to it then switches to a blank screen and it hangs.

                            Ok managed to change it on a different rom. Set to lr-mupen64plus and I'll test for quality.

                              @goobatroopa Hm, I get this behavior whenever I start Emulationstation via SSH remotely - the runcommand menu shows on the remote session instead of popping up on the monitor/TV. I'm sure this is not your problem, but maybe it's something related to runcommand being fussy.

                              Do you have another sdcard you can try an default 4.4 image, then update and try to see if you get the same thing ?

                                @goobatroopa now my save game has disappeared. How very odd indeed.

                                  @goobatroopa Smells like a SD card going bad.

                                    @mitu I was afraid you were going to say that. Think I'll try a fresh image and see if I get the same with a different card. I'll keep you updated but most likely sometime later this week. Thanks for your help so far.

                                      @mitu I have checked all my N64 games, all save data lost. Checked on other systems, all save data intact.

                                        As all my other saves appear to be ok, could it be that the save is in the mupen64plus folder and not the lr-mupen64plus location and it's not being found because I've changed the emulator, or is that not a thing?

                                          @goobatroopa standalone mupen64plus saves are not in the ROMs directory by default. I believe they are in a hidden folder. I'll have to check next time I'm near my pi.

                                            @quicksilver yeah that is my thought. So with that in mind, if I change the emulator, will it not be able to read my save game if it's in the old emulator folder?
