      is there a way to put the retropie 4.4 img on an SSD

        @aatheronb Yes, you could, but you'll not gain any speed over a regular USB stick/drive connected to the Pi.
        Look at the docs on how to put a Raspbian image on an USB drive and boot from it - https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/hardware/raspberrypi/bootmodes/msd.md.

          Is there a way to run a SSD from GPIO?
          I don't remember how to write an IMG to SATA Drive.

            Probably some sort of Sata HAT for the Pi that connects to the GPIO pins. :-)

                @aatheronb RetroPie works also on a PC Linux installation - so as long as the system you're getting supports Ubuntu (let's say 18.04), then it should be able to run RetroPie. The image from the site is only needed for Pi systems, not for PC.
