I keep trying to download the v3.8.1 image file and i get anywhere from 50Mb to my most recent attempt of 874Mb and it keeps failing. Is there some other mirror site other than "github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/releases/tag/3.8.1" or "retropie.org.uk/download" ? I have spent the entire day babysitting my machine so that it wont abort but there is no rhyme or reason as to why this keeps happening. Since takes 4 or 5 hours each attempt I'm quite frustrated after nearly 12 hours. The other annoying part is how windows wont resume the download either. I can see it in my downloads folder but when i click resume it tries for 2 seconds and says fail again.

I've confirmed the direct downloads are good on the RetroPie website (1 min 23 sec) and github (1 min 23 sec).

I'm not sure where you are in the world, your internet connection quality, operating system version, or browser; but since you have immediate control over your browser, try using a different one.

Chrome and FireFox are good choices if you're not using them already.

I just tried to download it one more time and its as if the floodgates opened on the bits. i pulled it down in 4min+ I'm downloading from Texas so its probably not ideal for a UK download site. Its a relief to get past this all day hurdle, finally. I tried using Firefox (my preferred browser) and Edge (only because i haven't installed Chrome yet) and both were doing the fail monkey dance until just now.

@Retrodog while our site is hosted in the UK the images are actually hosted on github which has its servers in the US. The 4.0 image will be smaller as well which should help a little bit.

I've tried over the past week to download the latest but it fails at under 100Mb. I'm in South Africa. I don't have any general internet issues and other sites work just fine. I haven't tried Github yet.

@PetroRie setup a Torrent download option. Here's the thread talking about it:

@backstander Thanks, unfortunately I'm finding no seeders. My torrent client is set to force encryption and ditch legacy so perhaps that's it. Trying the main download with DownThemAll in FF now.

@wedwo I'm the one who created the torrent for RetroPie. There are already 3 people seeding this, I have an upload speed of 1.5mb per second. I leave my computer on for almost the entire day, except when I go to bed I can't sleep because of the noise lol.

@PetroRie Brother ... why don't you turn a new raspberry pi into a legal seedbox? I already have one seeding various linux ISOs. It's too bad this site hasn't posted an official torrent/magnet yet or I'd be seeding that too, already. Blargh.

I wanted to do it only if they added the torrent to the download page. I asked a mod about this but he didn't reply. So far with the last torrent I have seeded 32gb and there are 10 other seeders. If the torrent would be on the download page it would reach more people.

@PetroRie I agree. I found someone's torrent (yours?) on a different thread and am already seeding that... but a torrent on the Download page would be so so much more helpful both to the admins and to new users, especially those with spotty connections.

My new plan is just to annoy them with repeated posts until they get excited about it (or do it anyway out of sheer aggravation).

@mikeperalta Yeah I created that topic I found it kinda strange that there was no torrent after some people complained that they wanted a torrent because they could not download the image from the site.

Yeah I wish they did, its not like they have to put so much work in it. All they have to do is add the torrent to the download page. I'm willing to seed every new version of RetroPie if it would become more populair I would buy a new raspberry and use it as a seed box.

I found that using a download manager sorted my hassles out - I had downthemall on Firefox. Eagleget should work too - both are free. As for torrenting, allowing legacy connections and not forcing encryption works too (default settings for uTorrent).
I really am surprised at the retropie folk not giving this a little more attention... also the issue of booting into Kodi first then getting the black screen when you open Retropie settings page - still struggling with that.

@wedwo You see, that is why I don't update RetroPie anymore. I'm on v4.0.0.2 and everything works fine for me. Only thing I dislike about Kodi is whenever I connect the PS4 controller to my Pi and run Kodi it glitches. They will fix this in the next update of Kodi.

I don't know if this helps anyone here but I read on another thread that some people are having trouble downloading RetroPie because of Anti Virus programs (like AVG) thinking there's a virus in it (false positive):

@backstander It's just a false alarm, I never liked AVG. Back in 2001 I had Norton, it even blocked my internet. Since that day I changed to Avira and never looked back. Avira is a free antivirus and its extremely good never had any problems with it.

I've seen that so many times working IT. Just running that official Norton Removal Tool fixes it every time :)

I agree and I use Avira as well. It's what AVG should've been! Even put it on my father-in-law's computer and he was using AVG and he likes Avira much better!
