I installed Raspbian with no issue. Connected to wifi, browsed the internet. Good times.
Then I installed RetroPie on top of it. It seems to work, but I don't know how to get back to the desktop after I exit. I've tried "startx," "sudo startx," and a whole bunch of variations on the theme. So, at the risk of sounding like an absolute n00b, how do I do that?

Pi Model or other hardware: B
      Power Supply used: stock Canakit
      RetroPie Version Used: 4.4
      Built From: retropie-4.4-rpi2_rpi3.img
USB Devices connected: SNES-looking controller, RF mouse/keyboard combo
      Controller used:
      Error messages received:
Log found in /dev/shm/runcommand.log (if relevant):
Guide used: (Mention if you followed a guide)
File: (File with issue - with FULL path)
Emulator: (Name of emulator - if applicable)
Attachment of config files: (PLEASE USE PASTEBIN.COM FOR LARGE LOGS)
      How to replicate the problem:

Have you tried xinit ? How did you install the desktop - the image you mentioned you used does not include it.

@mitu thanks for the quick response. I haven't tried xinit. I'll give it a shot and let you know how it pans out. The Raspbian image I used (https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/noobs/) did come with a desktop, though. Pixel, I believe.

@79goat5 Have you tried following this guide? https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Debian It worked pretty well for me.

@hiulit I looked at the guide and it didn't provide the information I needed, unless I missed it.

                Sort this out for me:

                1. You state you installed Raspbian initially, and later you say the source for it was "The Raspbian image I used (https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/noobs/) did come with a desktop, though. Pixel, I believe."
                2. You then state you installed RetroPie on top of it. You state the source for that was "Built From: retropie-4.4-rpi2_rpi3.img"
How did you actually 'install' retropie?
Did you run an installation package on your Raspbian system? or did you simply overwrite the retropie image on the same card?
If you re-imaged your card with the Retrpoie image, you no longer have anything from the first installation and therefore would not have a desktop anymore. (Retropie does not have a desktop since it is built on Raspbian Lite.)

@Thorr69 NOOBS allows you to 'multi-boot' between different OS-es, so there are actually 2 installations - one for Raspbian and one for RetroPie.

@79goat5 If you want to switch back to full Raspbian - the other OS - you should use the OS chooser displayed at boot (https://github.com/raspberrypi/noobs/blob/master/README.md), you cannot start the full Raspbian desktop from within RetroPie.
