Can't find the GPIO board, but how can I get a power LED to work?

Before I used the serial TX pin in my RPi B

However it doesn't seem to work on my RPi 3 as the LED stays lit... Am I missing something?

This works on my Pi3: I wired wire an external LED with a resistor (mine is part of a power button and has the appropriate resistor built-in) to pin 8 (UART TXD). Is that what you already did? It works for me. When I do a soft shutdown, the LED goes out.

Also, when I short GPIO3 (pin5) to ground, the Pi powers up, and the LED comes on again and stays on while running.

I will double check my pin placement (going from a PiB to Pi3, so I may have messed up the pins...

found the problem... I had in my notes GPIO 8 = TX for LED (from when I built my Rpi B...

So instead of Pin 8, I had it in GPIO 8 (Pin 24)

            I feel sheepish :p

                Hi!

Could you please decribe how to wire the led to function as described?

One led's pin to GPIO pin 8 (GPIO14) and the other led's pin to?

                5V? 3.3V? Ground?

                Thanks in advance!

@space-invader the second would go to ground... Its recommended to have a resistor between the LED and the ground to prevent shorts...
