Pi zero segmentation error

@awoodacre If you run emulationstation --debug from the command line, do you get any errrors in the log that's printed on console ? Make sure you use the right image (Pi 0/1) from the RetroPie site and have a good power supply.

Thanks I’ll give it a go. Using usb and usb power plug but still same

ran it and got this:

started going through game checks then hung and pings to it stopped too

also just been putty'd on and it just hung doing nothing.
seems like it might be after so long it falls over

From the RetroPie website, did you download the image "Raspberry Pi 2/3" or "Raspberry Pi 0/1"?

The output ratings of a usb on dvd player could very likely be inadequate.

A program suffering a segfault, can cause some memory addresses in the ram to become erroneous causing system abnormalities. If possible, a good reset should first be done before issuing any commands in ssh. To disable emulationstation temporarily you could try sudo raspi-config boot >> desktop-autologin. In the advanced settings you could check to make sure the memory split is at least 192.

cd
sudo RetroPie-Setup/retropie_setup.sh
then try reinstalling the emulationstation package.

The wall charger too could have inadequate ratings. It would be prudent to make sure it is 5V and at least 1A output.
Had the situation youre in arisen out of a previously working installation? And to make clearer, you tried a new image write on a different memory card and came up with this same error?
