@Double_J Then DonPachi is in next Ro2W and then you can shoot some aliens ;)
-
The winner is Donkey Kong 3

I keep forgetting to post screenshots. I gotta do that.

@b3k said in MAME ROW #140 - Donkey Kong 3:
It just doesn't seem like DK Jr is a proper sequel -- more of a spin off.
Considering the complete departure of the game mechanics from either of the first two games, the same can really also be said of 'Donkey Kong 3', despite it using the conventional sequel numbering. I've always kind of admired the creative decision to avoid naming DKJ 'Donkey Kong 2'. Personally, I think it would have made more sense to continue that naming convention into DK3 with something like 'Donkey Kong's Greenhouse'. Something to that effect would have also noted that the game was a follow up to the Game&Watch 'Greenhouse' as well as the previous Donkey Kong games. As far as the sequels not feeling like the original; it's definitely true that they don't, but then again, a game as good as 'Donkey Kong' is simply a tough act to follow. Heck, even all the direct home ports fail to capture its full appeal and nuances.

I've gotten 16,400 so far -- clearly a top score!
I'll post my screenshot to claim my title next week
:-pMaybe that's why I feel there should have been a DK2 -- I'm better at jumping than shooting

Still not great...
-
@IanDaemon Maybe @VictimRLSH can give some hints ;)
-
@cyperghost I wouldn't make any money as a professional DK3 player, but that's not stopping me from playing. :)

@gomisensei I think I'm frozen round about 50k
This is stage 4 afaik ... and yours?
-
10, you can see by the little level icon on the bottom right.
This was one of the first games that i was the best at when it came out, was never great at pacman, mario brothers, or DK.
-
@gomisensei Is there some tactics? I try to rush as fast as possible through the levels. And if you collect the special spray can you can take it in next round...
Indeed ... the level indicator is down in right corner ;)
Here is a 5,500k score video ;)
-
@cyperghost I honestly had absolutely no idea that you could clear the level by eliminating all the bugs or that the bugs were anything but unlimited... I just turbo-pumped till the sprayer dropped, boosted 3 or 4 levels, then when i died, repeated until i ran out of plays. Blitz n repeat.
-
There is only 1 level where you must spray him to the top, and that is the level he is throwing coconuts at you. In the advanced stages clearing the round by killing all the bugs is the only way to advance.
-
Yep, seems the game is all about clearing levels and preventing the plants from being taken (to maximize your bonus).
On the first level, I cleared all the bugs one time to see if I'd get a higher score. No point advantage versus just using the super sprayer as fast as possible. I seem to get around 12k no matter what I do. You trade points for time with points for bugs.
Maybe there is some advanced strategy to get more points. I suppose you could get more waiting for a bug to grab a plant, but that will also take even more time to clear the level.Just watched some of the video @cyperghost shared (first 8 minutes at least). The only extra point item I saw there is using your super sprayer in the 2nd level to kill the creepy crawlies. Otherwise work fast, time those jumps/sprays well to get DK off the screen on the yellow levels.
-
I've been playing a bunch of Hotdog Storm (after never hearing of it before this) and I have to admit it's pretty cool. It's right up there with some of my favorite SHMUPS.
-
Here is my high score for now. I may or may not come back later and try for higher one. I would probably have a hard time if I tried to beat the score of @gomisensei though :-]
-
Still not the best.
-
I set a new personal best today at 125,500, but not good enough (yet!).
I have to fight the instinct to drop down when I get fired on. That's what gets me half the time.
