How to activate Remote Control Setup GUI from PuTTY
-
I do not know what happened but I cannot get my remotes to work. I have an xbox 360 & an 8bitdo NES30 Pro running on 3.8.1. Both are connected and have worked in the past, but I cannot get either one to respond. After checking with PuTTY everything looks ok. I tried connecting in a keyboard but that is also unresponsive. Pressing buttons on the NES30 Pro or Keyboard presses wake the system up from the screensaver.
I would like to know if there is a way to reactivate the initial setup screen that asks the user to map the button presses in emulationstation. I really don't want to reinstall everything from scratch.... again :-/

Sure. This actually comes up fairly often for a variety of reasons. Drop down to the command line by pressing the F4 key on the local keyboard. Then, from there or your remote terminal, type:
mv /opt/retropie/configs/all/emulationstation/es_input.cfg /opt/retropie/configs/all/emulationstation/es_input.cfg.bak
Press enter, then type:
sudo /home/pi/RetroPie-Setup/retropie_packages.sh emulationstation configure
Press enter, then type:
emulationstation
Press enter again and wait for Emulation Station to load, where you will be greeted by a configuration prompt.

to add to what mediamogul said, its a great idea to backup all of your config files. Not only for potential data loss/corruption, for updates as well.....

Very true. I happen to be making a backup of my RetroPie install at this moment.

@mediamogul I have a linux computer setup just for this lol. Config backups and images :)

Thanks that did it. any chance that the Wiki on the remotes could be updated? I didn't know what to search for nor could I find anything relevant. I'm sure it'll help a lot of people if this is a known issue.
Also showing instructions on how to backup settings. I backed up all the settings in emulationstation but I'm sure there are some other key files that I should back up.
Thanks :)

I believe most people just make a backup image of their card. If something goes wrong, you can just restore from that image.
