Hey forum! I'm new here so y'all don't know me. I'm not a noob when it comes to RetroPie and I've been working with it for about 4 months now. I decided to build my very own custom arcade cabinet. I saw a YouTube video on full hotkey customization and I saw the "enable", "disable", or "press ALT" options. I understand completely what all of them mean, but I want to put volume up and volume down on the cabinet without having to press the hotkey. Normally, I would select "disable", but I want hotkeys for other things. Can I have things both ways? My goal is to have a variety of hotkeys (that you would hold the hotkey to use) and have other buttons (specifically vol. up and vol. down) work without hotkeys. I know how much ya'll help so I came here. Thank you so much!

You can have it both ways, but not just with RetroArch.
You can use the triggerhappy program (included in Raspbian and therefore in RetroPie) and bind the desired keys/buttons to a couple of commands that will modify the audio volume. There's an example right on the program's homepage - https://github.com/wertarbyte/triggerhappy - using amixer to control the audio volume.
